English at St. Saviour’s and St. Olave’s.

As a core subject English plays a central role in helping students to develop into confident writers, analytical readers and skilled communicators. It provides them with the tools they need to analyse the language with which they are confronted on a daily basis. Students are equipped for the future through their study of a range of literary and non-fiction texts. Ever increasingly, this also includes information technology and moving image texts. All of teachers in the English department are passionate about English language and literature. They have all undertaken postgraduate study and, in some instance, have also studied higher research degrees.

Within the department we embrace innovative approaches to the study of English, which includes peer-teaching opportunities. This enables students to take responsibility for their learning and to demonstrate their knowledge and skills to other students, an effective way of reinforcing learning. Students are also given opportunities to study in a range of contexts, including gallery and theatre visits, taking part in debates and becoming involved in a range of exciting projects, as exemplified by recent work undertaken at the BBC and ‘The Guardian’. In addition, we have links with ‘Speakersbank’, a programme intended to develop public speaking skills, and our students have performed particularly well in competitions with other schools.
